Movie Thoughts: the Perks of Being A Wallflower

I really feel the need to share this to everyone since I think this movie had not been properly advertised. I mean, most of my friends do not even know about its existence! ;A;

"We are Infinite"

I am not gonna lie. Initially, I wanted to watch this because of:
Emma Watson, as 'Sam'

Well, besides Harry Potter, this would be the 1st movie I've seen her in, so I was a little excited. You gotta love how she pronounce "Oh my God!" in American accent. LOL It is so different from the Hermione we've watched growing up, "...It is LeviOsa, not LevioSA!"
Ok, I shall stop now. This isn't about HP or Emma Watson (not entirely anyway). It is about the story's narrator-'Charlie' and his friends.

Logan Lerman as Charlie and Ezra Miller as Patrick

The film starts out with Charlie writing a letter to "Friend", nervous about his first day of high school. During his first day, he was awkward and alone, refusing to participate in class even though he knew the answers to his teacher's questions. His English teacher realized his potential and hence been giving Charlie books to read.

During a Football game, Charlie took the courage and spoke to a senior-Patrick (who was repeating a class in Charlie's year). There, he met Sam, step-sister of Patrick. They quickly became friends and he was invited to a houseparty during the high school dance.
At the party, he got stoned after unknowingly eaten a weed brownie, and starts talking without caring, admitting to Sam that his best friend had killed himself. Sam told Patrick about it and they decided to "make a toast" to welcome Charlie to "the land of Misfit Toys".  They later drove him home and when a song played on the radio, Sam immediately proclaimed that it was a 'good song' telling Patrick to drive through the tunnel. She climbed to the back of the truck, extended her arms and listened to the song.

Known as the 'Tunnel Song' in the film
That was the part of the movie that really got me attracted.

I shall not spoil you all anymore, but let's just say I immediately went to buy the book after the movie.
Yes. To me, it was that good.

This, was a movie about growing up in the 90's (well, in America).
What I like about this film is that, it moves away from the technologies we are currently drown in and gave us back a little piece of the past. Being born in the 90s, all those seemed really nostalgic. Crazy or not, believe me when I say that I almost teared when Charlie opened the Christmas present from Sam and it turned out to be a type-writer.
The movie's soundtrack was acclaimed too by the critics with Jen Channy of The Washington Post saying "The other star in this movie is the soundtrack which, in keeping with the story’s early ’90s setting, spills forth a parade of melodies from the Cocteau Twins, Cracker and, yes, the Smiths."  - Wikipedia

What really had pushed me to buy the book are those notable quotes from the movie:
  • Welcome, to the land of Misfit Toys
  • We accept the love we think we deserve
  • And in that moment, I swear we were infinite.

In addition to great screenplay and directs from the author- Stephan Chbosky himself, great actors' and actresses' contribution to the film made this a movie not to be missed.

Trust me. The movie is as awesome as this photo. :P
